January 24, 2013 - Justin
This last week was amazing for January on the Oregon coast. Sunny and bright, cold in the morning and warm in the afternoon. Weather that has to be played in and makes you feel guilty if you're not outside. Right now I have quite a bit of back end work on my plate and that usually means unhealthy amounts hours spent in front of the computer. As you can imagine, with rare, springlike weather such as we've been having, this causes conflict to my outdoor loving soul. Working as a freelance artist, it's always a balancing act trying to do your job well, spend time with friends and family, making sure they feel loved and at the same time living your life the way you want. I'm also always trying to whittle down the direction of my work so there is less of a gap between what I want to be doing and what I have to do, but there is always struggle and usually some imbalance. Please don't get me wrong, I am so, so lucky to have the opportunity to do what I do for a living, I'm just saying it's not always all that simple.
All that said, some damn fine things happened this last week. The weather was redonkulous. I have some friends that live on a beautiful south facing hillside and we spent a couple days out in that silly weather rebuilding a garden that we'll be planting things in before too long. While we do have a great deck that does get some good summer sun, it doesn't really work to grow much in the way of veggies, so we're pretty excited to have the opportunity to grow a big garden. It's always good to spend time outside doing manual labor. Something about it just feels right. Huge thanks to the crew at the hillhouse for sharing their space and home. I also got to spend time with a good friend I hadn't seen in quite a while, which is always great...and somewhere far, far away the ocean got all worked up and sent us a one of the most beautiful swells I've ever seen. And much work was done.
